Superfoods To Add to Grocery List

Forget all of the candy bars and potato chips you've been throwing into your grocery cart every time you shop Try chucking these superfoods that also help you lose that fat into your cart the next time you go.

1. Greek Yogurt

When many of us think of yogurt, we think of the creamy type and are like, "What the funk is Greek yogurt??" when it's mentioned to us and are turned off by it when we hear that it's a thick and chunky yogurt. However, contrary to popular beliefs, Greek has many benefits other than a delicious taste. Greek yogurt has twice the amount of protein as regular yogurt so it will keep you fuller without wanting to pick at that piece of cake, and also has half the carbs as the creamy yogurt. Greek yogurt also boosts your digestive system so you will burn fat faster. Next time you decide to pick some up, try the new Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt at only 80 calories per container!

2. Kale

Kale may actually be one of the healthiest leafy greens around. Although a bit higher in calories than most greens, because of it's sweet taste, it comes with many benefits. The fiber and Vitamin C in kale speeds up digestion and increases metabolism to cause fat burn and weight loss while the calcium and Vitamins K and D strengthens the bones. Plus, kale leaves are filled with omega 3 fatty acids to boosts the overall health. I personally like to boil kale in water and drink the broth along with the cooked leaves.

3. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes have one of the highest satiety indexes among all foods. Although a starch, these should not be avoided when deciding to cut out carbs. They contain high contents of fiber and potassium to keep you full and also lowers blood pressure. Sweet potatoes are deemed a "beauty food" because the vitamins C and E play roles in the health of your hair and skin. Try eating one of      these right before your prom or wedding.

4. Almonds

Although almonds are a fat, they are also healthy fats, which we need to feel satisfied and nourished to prevent us from eating more, therefore aids in weight loss. Almonds also reduces the risk of heart attacks and boosts brain activity. The phosphorus in almonds improves bone and teeth strength. For maximum benefits, try raw almonds.

5. Unsweetened Pure Almond Milk

30 calories per cup?!?! What more could I ask for? This container has the perfect combination: great for those who are lactose intolerant, those who are vegan, those who need more calcium in their diets, and those who are trying to watch their waist lines. Compared the 150 calories of whole milk, this selection is not only tasty but fat burning and filling as well. Almond milk is also low in sugar and high in iron, giving you the good stuff but leaving out the bad.

6. Bananas

For me, bananas are the ultimate workout foods when paired with a glass of milk. Bananas are high in potassium and dietary fiber which keeps blood sugar low and prevents you from overeating. It also gives you the energy you need to keep you going longer when you're breaking out a sweat. Plus, bananas prevent your bones from weakening when you are working out. The potassium bananas contain is the answer to avoid blacking out and muscle cramping. It may be one of the higher calorie fruits, but every calorie is a healthy one.

7. Blueberries

Among all fruits, blueberries are the richest in antioxidants which boosts your immune system and keeps you from getting sick. Blueberries reduces body fat and also improves your vision. It improves brain functioning and aids in digestion to prevent constipation. Most importantly, they reduce cancer risks and are delicious.

8. Spinach

Spinach is a popular leafy green that is not only rich in nutrients but also low in calories. It is also the most popular greens used in smoothies and is much more nutritious when used in salads than iceberg lettuce. Spinach is also rich in antioxidants and are heart healthy. Not only that, it is also a brain food.

9. Black "Forbidden" Rice

Despite the name, black rice is actually much healthier than brown rice because of the extra husk that has yet to be removed. Some benefits of black rice include having an anti-inflammatory effect, lowers the risk of cancer and improves heart health. This has been ignored in the past but has become more and more popular in the world of health foods.

10. Flax seeds

Flax seeds are one of the main go to foods of vegans and vegetarians for their source of omega 3 fats. They are a great source of fiber and also acts as a natural laxative. It also lowers cancer risks and lower cholesterol. Sprinkle some of these in oatmeal for a healthy breakfast.
